Every placement cycle leaves a group of candidates without a school. Some did not meet the requirements of any of their choices; some met them but were displaced by a stronger field; some made a set of choices that were all competitive.
Self-placement is the mechanism that exists for that group. It is genuinely useful, and it is routinely misunderstood as an appeal — which leads families to spend the window arguing for a school that has no space rather than securing one that does.
What it actually is
Self-placement allows an unplaced candidate to select from schools that still have vacancies after the main matching run has completed. The candidate chooses from what remains, subject to their eligibility.
That is the whole mechanism. It reopens choice; it does not reopen the matching. Schools that filled in the main run are not part of it.
The distinction that matters
An appeal asks for a decision to be reconsidered. Self-placement does not reconsider anything — it allocates remaining capacity.
Families who approach it as an appeal spend the window pursuing the original first choice, which is full, and reach the end of it with nothing. Families who approach it as a selection problem spend the window ranking what is actually available, and end it with a place.
Self-placement is a choice among schools with remaining space, not an appeal against the original result. Move early in the window, judge the available schools on what they actually offer, and confirm the current dates and procedure with the Ghana Education Service rather than a group chat.
Speed matters more than anything else
Available spaces are finite and they are taken as the window runs. The set of options on the first day is materially better than the set on the last.
This is the practical reason to decide quickly rather than deliberate. A family still weighing options at the end of the window is choosing from what nobody else wanted, which is a worse position than an imperfect decision taken early.

Judge the available schools properly
The instinct is to rank what is left by reputation, which is mostly a proxy for how long a school has been well known. It is worth looking past that.
What affects a student directly is whether the school offers the programme they need, whether it is reachable or boardable affordably, and what its teaching in that specific subject area is like. A less famous school that offers the right programme and is affordable is a better outcome than a famous one that offers neither.
Check the programme, not just the school
A vacancy is a vacancy in a specific programme. Accepting a place in a programme the student does not want in order to attend a preferred school creates a problem two years later at the WASSCE elective stage.
The elective combination a student ends up with governs which tertiary programmes they can apply to at all. That is a longer-running consequence than which school badge is on the uniform.
Take the dates from the source
Windows, portals and procedures for placement are announced by the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education, and they are not identical from year to year.
Dates circulated informally are frequently last year's. Where a family has one window to act in, that is an expensive thing to get from the wrong source — check the official announcement and act on that.
Nobody needs to be paid to do this for you
Self-placement is a process a family can complete themselves through the official channel. Every cycle brings people offering, for a fee, to secure a place that is not theirs to give.
If a place exists you can take it through the official route; if it does not, no payment creates one. Treat any offer of a guaranteed placement for money as what it is.
